Sew Your Perfect Fall/Winter Coat: A 2-Day Workshop with Irene!

A 2-part class.  Sept. 24, 10:00 am - 5:00 pm and Oct. 1, 10:00 am - 5:00 pm

Are you ready to tackle a rewarding sewing project and create a timeless, lined coat that will keep you warm and stylish for seasons to come? Join our expert instructor, Irene, for an intensive and inspiring 2-day workshop dedicated to the art of coat making!

In this class, you'll delve into the techniques required to construct a beautiful, fully lined fall or winter coat, gaining valuable skills in outerwear construction. You'll choose between two popular and versatile patterns, each offering distinct features to match your personal style.

Your Pattern Choices:

Option 1: Simplicity 9854 Misses' Lined Coat for American Sewing Guild

  • Description: This pattern features a relaxed-fit coat with classic notched lapels, offering a sophisticated and comfortable silhouette. It includes an inverted pleat at the center back for added movement and style, a clean button closure, and practical patch pockets with flaps. Simplicity 9854 is rated as "Average" difficulty, making it an excellent choice for those looking to build on their garment sewing skills with a tailored project.

  • Ideal for: Sewers who appreciate classic lines and a slightly oversized, comfortable fit.

Option 2: Burda 6736 Misses' Jackets and Coats

  • Description: Burda 6736 offers two chic and very wearable styles: a below-hip jacket or a knee-length, straight coat. Both views feature a clean, single-breasted button closure and an integral spade collar that is slightly raised in the back, adding a modern touch. This pattern is often rated as "Super Easy" or "Easy" by Burda, making it a great entry point into coat making, while still yielding professional results.

  • Ideal for: Those seeking a more straightforward coat construction with a contemporary, clean aesthetic.

What You'll Learn in This 2-Day Workshop:

Under Irene's expert guidance, you will learn essential coat-making techniques, including:

  • Fabric Selection & Preparation: Understanding suitable outerwear fabrics (wool blends, tweed, boucle, twill) and lining materials, and proper preparation.

  • Precise Cutting: Mastering accurate cutting for bulky fabrics and multiple layers.

  • Interfacing & Underlining: Applying appropriate interfacing for structure and durability, and potentially underlining for added warmth and body.

  • Constructing Key Features: Techniques for sewing notched lapels (Simplicity) or integral collars (Burda), buttonholes, and various pocket styles.

  • Sleeve Insertion: Confidently setting in sleeves for a smooth finish.

  • Lining Construction: The crucial "bagging" method for a professional, fully enclosed lining.

  • Finishing Touches: Pressing techniques, hemming, and adding closures for a couture-like result.

Who is this Class For?

This 2-day workshop is best suited for intermediate sewers or confident beginners who have completed a few garment projects and are comfortable with their sewing machine. While the Burda pattern is rated easier, constructing a lined coat is a significant undertaking that requires patience and attention to detail.

Class Structure (2 Days):

  • Day 1: Focus on pattern preparation, fabric cutting, interfacing application, and constructing the main coat shell (body and sleeves).  You'll have some homework.

  • Day 2: Concentrate on lining construction, attaching the lining to the shell, inserting the collar, creating buttonholes, and all final finishing details.
